When people hear “AI in recruitment”, they often think about replacement.
Recruiters disappearing. Sourcing dying. AI interviews taking over. CV screening becoming fully automated. Human judgement being pushed out of the process.
But after this conversation, I kept thinking about one simple line:
AI should handle the tasks. Humans should handle the trust.
For the new episode of HR Circle, a podcast by International HR Club and UnifyHub, we sat down with Vanessa Raath, talent sourcing trainer, AI literacy coach, and one of the most active global voices in recruitment, to talk about how AI is actually changing sourcing, recruitment and TA work.
And very quickly, the conversation moved beyond the usual “AI will replace recruiters” debate.
We talked about:
- sourcing and Boolean search
- Claude Skills and ChatGPT Projects
- CV formatting and recruiter admin
- AI screening and AI interviews
- compliance and the EU AI Act
- personal branding and AI visibility
The biggest takeaway for me:
AI is not killing recruitment. But it is changing what “good recruitment” means.
It is not enough anymore to say:
“I know how to source.” “I know how to screen CVs.” “I know how to write outreach messages.”
Can you use AI to remove unnecessary admin, while still protecting the human moments that actually build trust?
Recruitment has always been full of tasks that nobody really enjoys:
- formatting CVs
- updating ATS records
- writing repetitive messages
- copying information from one system to another
- summarizing conversations
- building basic market maps
These are exactly the areas where AI can be extremely useful.
But the point is not to remove the recruiter.
The point is to stop wasting recruiter time on low-value manual work.
Sourcing is not dead, but it is changing
There is a popular opinion that AI can now find everyone.
But AI can support sourcing only if the person using it understands how sourcing works in the first place.
If you do not understand Boolean search, X-ray search, GitHub, Stack Overflow, Reddit, Meetup groups or competitor mapping, AI will not magically fix that.
It may give you an answer.
But not necessarily the right one.
So the future of sourcing is not “AI instead of sourcers.” It is sourcers who understand both search logic and AI workflows.
AI screening needs proper testing
We also discussed AI screening.
Some tools are more advanced. Some are basically keyword matching. Some look only at the CV. Some go deeper into context.
But if you are going to use AI screening, test it properly.
Run a sample case. Ask recruiters to review the same candidate pool. Compare their shortlist with the AI output. Understand how the tool makes decisions. Check what data it uses.
Especially in recruitment, where compliance and human oversight are becoming more serious, this matters.
What stayed with me
This episode is useful for anyone in HR who wants to understand how the profession is changing.
Because AI will not remove the need for human judgement.
But it will expose which parts of our work are truly human and which parts are just repetitive tasks we got used to doing manually.
The future of recruitment is not about choosing between AI and humans.
It is about knowing what to automate, what to augment and what should stay deeply human.
And maybe that is the real skill HR professionals need to build now:
AI fluency with human judgement.
